Ivy’s been telling me we need this podcast.
She keeps getting calls from potential clients who say the same thing: “I just need nutrition coaching. I just want a meal plan to lose weight.”
And every time she tells me this, I’m like, “Did you explain that strength training is what makes the difference between looking lean versus looking soft?”
She’s like, “Yes, but we don’t have a specific podcast I can send them on this.”
So here we are.
If you’re reading this thinking you just need to dial in your nutrition to get the body you want, I’m going to challenge that assumption. Because I’ve seen what happens when people only focus on the food side of the equation.
They end up skinny fat.
Let me explain.
The Scale Lies (And You Know It)
Look, you can absolutely lose weight by fixing your nutrition. If you’re eating the standard American diet, processed food, meat, dairy, whatever, and you switch to whole food plant-based eating, you’ll drop some pounds.
Especially if you’re in a calorie deficit.
The scale will go down. You’ll feel accomplished. Maybe you’ll even fit into some old jeans.
But here’s what nobody tells you: you might not like what you see in the mirror.
Because losing weight and improving your body composition are two very different things.
I always say: Training builds your body. Nutrition reveals it.
Nutrition is only half the equation. And if you’ve never properly built your body, there’s nothing to reveal once you lose the weight.
What “Skinny Fat” Actually Means (And Why It Happens)
Most people over 50 have never taken the time to properly build their body through strength training.
Women especially. They grew up in an era where they were told, “Don’t lift weights. Do cardio. Do yoga. Do Pilates. That’s feminine exercise.”
So they spent decades doing everything except the one thing that would have built and preserved their muscle.
And now when they decide to lose weight by just changing their nutrition, this is what happens:
They eat whole food plant-based. They’re satiated with fiber and nutrients. They naturally eat fewer calories than before. The scale drops.
But when they look in the mirror? Soft. Mushy. No definition. No shape.
They’re lighter, sure. But they don’t look fit. They don’t feel strong.
That’s skinny fat. You lost the weight, but you didn’t build anything underneath.
I’ve seen it hundreds of times. Someone comes off a plant-based diet, loses 20 pounds, and goes, “I thought I’d look better than this.”
And I’m like, “You revealed your body. But you never built it.”
The Real Problem: Sarcopenia and Osteopenia
This goes deeper than just aesthetics though.
As you age, your body naturally loses muscle mass. It’s called sarcopenia. Your bones also weaken. That’s osteopenia, which can progress to osteoporosis.
Nutrition alone won’t fix this.
You need to put stress on your muscles to tell your body, “Hey, we need to keep this muscle. We need to build more.”
You need to put stress on your bones to tell them, “Hey, we need to stay strong. We can’t afford to get weaker.”
That only happens through resistance training. Strength training. Lifting weights, using bands, doing bodyweight exercises, whatever form of resistance you choose.
One of our clients, she’s 63, told me on a call: “My legs don’t feel as strong. I notice when I get up from a chair, I’m using my hands to push myself up. That’s a bad sign.”
She’s right. That is a bad sign.
And no meal plan is going to fix that. Only strength training will.
We have members in their 70s and 80s doing cycling trips that some of my friends in their 30s couldn’t handle. Why? Because they’ve been strength training for years.
That’s the power of actually building your body, not just losing weight.
“But I Just Want to Be Healthy”
I get it. Some people genuinely don’t care about aesthetics. They just want to be healthy.
And whole food plant-based eating is incredible for health. It reduces your risk of heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, all of it.
But here’s what’s wild: new studies show that strength training is also key for preventing dementia.
So if longevity is your goal, if quality of life is your goal, you still need both. Nutrition and training.
You can’t just eat your way to being strong. You can’t just eat your way to having healthy bones. You can’t just eat your way to being able to carry all your groceries in one trip or pick up your grandkids without your back hurting.
You have to train for that.
Why Our Clients Wish They Started Earlier
We’re primarily a fitness company that uses whole food plant-based nutrition as the foundation.
We’re not a nutrition company that happens to include some exercise.
And our clients, the ones in their 60s, 70s, 80s, they all say the same thing: “I wish I had started strength training decades ago.”
Because they’ve experienced what it’s like to actually build muscle in their 50s, 60s, 70s. They feel their bodies change. They feel themselves getting stronger.
They can climb stairs without holding the railing. They can get up from a chair without using their hands. They have energy that people 20 years younger don’t have.
And they realize how much easier life would have been if they’d built that foundation earlier.
But the next best time to start is now.
The Body Composition Equation
Body composition is simple: muscle and fat.
You want to build muscle. You want to lose fat.
If you just focus on losing fat through nutrition, you’ll get lighter. But you won’t look fit. You won’t be strong.
If you combine strength training with proper nutrition, you’ll build muscle while losing fat. That’s actual body recomposition.
That’s the difference between stepping on the scale and being lighter versus looking in the mirror and actually liking what you see.
And honestly? Looking good is a bonus. The real win is being able to live your life without limitations.
Being able to travel without worrying about keeping up. Being able to play with your grandkids without getting winded. Being able to do the things you love without your body holding you back.
That’s what strength training gives you.
How You Lose the Weight Is How You’ll Keep It Off
I always say this: how you lose the weight is how you’re going to keep it off.
If you sprint to lose weight, you’re going to have to sprint to keep it off.
If you take a sustainable approach, building muscle while losing fat, eating whole food plant-based, training consistently, you’ll be able to maintain that for life.
That’s what we focus on. Not quick fixes. Not 90-day challenges. Sustainable transformation.
I’d rather you take a nice walk while losing weight than sprint the whole way. Because I know you can maintain that walk for the rest of your life.
What If You Just Want Nutrition Coaching?
If you’re looking for just nutrition coaching, we’re not the right fit.
There are great organizations like nutritionstudies.org, the National Health Association, all the plant-based doctors out there who focus purely on nutrition.
But if you want to get fit, build muscle, combat sarcopenia and osteopenia, improve your body composition, and disease-proof your body through strength training and whole food plant-based nutrition, we’re the ones to talk to.
We’re a fitness company at our core. We specialize in helping people over 50 build the body they want while living longer and healthier through plant-based eating.
If that’s not your goal, that’s totally fine. But don’t expect to get the body you actually want by only focusing on half the equation.
The Bottom Line
Nutrition reveals your body. Training builds it.
You need both.
If you just focus on nutrition, you’ll be lighter. But you might not be stronger, leaner, or more capable.
If you combine strength training with whole food plant-based eating, you’ll build a body that actually performs the way you want it to while looking the way you want it to look.
And more importantly, you’ll extend the quality and duration of your life.
That’s what this is really about. Not just looking good. Living well.
So if you’ve been thinking you just need a meal plan to transform, I’m challenging you to reconsider.
Build your body. Then reveal it.
That’s how you get the results you actually want.
