What’s Actually Driving You?

I spent the first few years of my fitness journey running from something.

I did not know it at the time. I thought I was being disciplined. I thought the anger I brought to every workout was just intensity, just how serious people train. I listened to aggressive music, I pushed through pain like it was a test of character, and I told myself that this edge was what separated me from everyone else who quit after two weeks.

But the truth, which took me years to see clearly, is that I was not training because I loved my body. I was training because I was terrified of what would happen if I stopped. The anxiety of losing control, the fear of going back to the version of me that felt powerless, the need to prove to everyone and mostly to myself that I was not the kid who grew up with nothing. That was the engine running underneath everything I did, and it was powerful, and it worked, and it was slowly eating me alive.

I call this the cogs in your machine.

Every single person who walks into a gym or starts a meal plan or hires a coach is being driven by something. Most people never stop to ask what that something actually is because the action feels productive regardless of the motivation. You are working out. You are eating better. What does it matter why?

It matters because the why determines how long you last.
