Happy Saturday,
I hope everyone is doing well.
As many of you know, I’m currently on a digital detox and traveling in Asia. I actually wrote this before I left.
Typically, every week I share a “lesson of the week.” Since this one was pre written, I decided to do something a little different and pull together some of the biggest lessons and takeaways I’ve personally gotten from interviewing our oldest member at Mavy Wellness, Pam, who is 86 years old at the time of recording and now 87 (Happy Birthday Pam).
Many of you probably heard her episode on the podcast. It ended up doing incredibly well on YouTube, and honestly, it’s one of those conversations that sticks with you long after it ends.
I wanted to share some of the most valuable lessons that came out of that interview. I’ll also link the full episode below in case you want to watch or listen to it yourself.
Here are a few things Pam reminded me of, in her own words.
1. Strength is freedom. Not vanity.
Pam shared a moment that stopped me in my tracks.
“I could no longer get my overhead bag into the compartment on my flight by myself. And that really surprised me.”
After just a couple of months of training, she told a very different story.
“Someone said, ‘Can I help you with that?’ And I said, ‘Thank you, but I need to do this myself.’ And I put my overhead bag in the overhead bin.”
That wasn’t about weight loss. That was about independence.
At 86, strength meant not having to rely on someone else for a basic part of life.
2. It’s never too late. And that’s not just a saying.
Pam said this plainly.
“It just seems to me that it’s never too late to do something for yourself. And if I’m proof of that, then so be it.”
She didn’t say it with hype or drama. She said it as a lived truth.
She started strength training in her mid 80s. She built muscle. She changed how her clothes fit. She changed how her body felt. And more importantly, she changed how confident she felt moving through the world.
3. The scale is not the story.
Pam was very clear about this.
“I haven’t lost a huge amount of weight, but my body has changed.”
She talked about fitting into shirts and pants she hadn’t worn in years. She talked about posture, balance, and feeling stronger in her own body.
That’s body recomposition. And it matters far more than a number.
4. Fear of falling is real and ignoring it doesn’t help.
Pam lives alone. She’s had a fall before. She’s had a stroke in the past. She doesn’t sugarcoat this.
“If you’re not going to exercise, you’re going to end up sitting in a chair and you’re not going to be able to do the things you want to do.”
For her, strength training wasn’t optional. It was preventative care.
She said it best:
“I don’t want to fall again… because if you break a hip, that could be it.”
5. You have to decide you’re worth it.
This might have been the most powerful line of the entire interview.
“I guess the answer is am I worth it? And I guess the answer is yes, I am.”
Pam has lived through loss, grief, caregiving, illness, and decades of dieting. When she joined Mavy Wellness, it wasn’t about chasing a look. It was about choosing herself.
She put it simply at the end of the episode:
“Don’t put off till tomorrow what you could make a decision about today about how good you could feel in the future.”
If you want to watch or listen to the full conversation with Pam, I’ve linked it below. I highly recommend it. Her perspective is grounding, honest, and incredibly motivating.

Hi Maxime. Pam’s story really stayed with me, especially the way strength was framed as independence and dignity, not transformation. It felt grounding to hear aging talked about with so much honesty, agency, and respect.
