Most people think health and fitness transformation is about motivation.
It’s not.
Motivation is unreliable. It fluctuates. It disappears when life gets busy, when energy is low, or when results don’t show up fast enough.
What actually drives lasting transformation is momentum. And the best way I’ve found to explain this after working with hundreds of people across decades of age is what I call the Transformation Flywheel.
Imagine a massive, heavy flywheel. When it’s completely still, it’s dead weight. Trying to move it requires a lot of effort. You push, strain, and sweat just to get it to budge even a little.
That is exactly what the beginning of a health transformation feels like.
You’re changing how you eat. You’re adding resistance training. You’re learning new skills like meal prep, time management, and saying no to old patterns. There is no momentum yet. Every action feels heavy.
This is where most people quit. Not because they’re incapable, but because they mismanage expectations.
They assume that if it feels hard, something must be wrong.
But nothing is wrong. You’re just pushing dead weight.
Consistency Moves the Flywheel, Not Perfection
At the start, the only goal is to keep your hands on the wheel.
Not to be perfect. Not to optimize. Not to crush every workout or eat flawlessly.
Just to keep pushing.
Some days you’ll feel strong. Other days you’ll feel like you only have 40 percent to give. But if you give 100 percent of what you have that day, the wheel still moves.
This is where people misunderstand consistency. Consistency does not mean doing everything right. It means continuing to apply effort over time, even when the effort feels uneven.
Eventually, something interesting happens.
The wheel starts to move.
Not fast. Not dramatically. But noticeably.
You still have to push, but it requires less force than before. This is when systems begin to form naturally. You figure out when you actually work out best. You organize your kitchen in a way that makes meal prep easier. You stop relying on willpower and start relying on structure.
Momentum is being built.
Sustainability Is Learned, Not Chosen
People love to say they want something to be “sustainable.”
What they really mean is they want it to feel easy immediately.
That’s not how sustainability works.
Sustainability is the result of repeated action over time until something becomes second nature.
Think about starting a new job. At first, everything feels overwhelming. You don’t know the systems, the tools, or the expectations. But you show up. You make mistakes. You learn. You repeat.
Fast forward a year and the same tasks feel effortless.
Your health transformation works the same way.
Your current lifestyle is sustainable, but it produced your current results. If you want a different outcome, you need a new system. That system will feel unfamiliar at first. That does not mean it’s wrong. It means it’s new.
When Momentum Protects You
As the flywheel continues to spin, something powerful happens.
Small mistakes stop having big consequences.
When your system is dialed in and momentum is high, one off meal doesn’t derail weeks of progress. Missing one workout doesn’t collapse everything. The wheel keeps spinning.
This is the difference between someone who has been training and eating well for months or years versus someone just starting. Early on, mistakes feel devastating. Later, they are just minor disruptions.
That’s why the beginning is the hardest part. And why maintaining momentum is far easier than restarting from zero.
Even after nearly two decades of training, I’m not immune to this. If I stop exercising and stop eating well, my flywheel slows down. Eventually, it stops. Restarting is always harder than maintaining.
That’s the truth no program advertises.
The Goal Is Identity, Not a Finish Line
The flywheel doesn’t spin forever on its own.
You never “arrive” at a place where effort is no longer required. What changes is the amount of effort needed.
Eventually, health becomes part of who you are. You don’t negotiate it daily. You don’t obsess over it. You maintain it.
This is what we see repeatedly at Mavy Wellness, with people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and even 80s.
The transformation isn’t just physical. It’s mental.
When you understand the flywheel, you stop reacting emotionally to every fluctuation. You stop quitting when things feel hard. You stop chasing shortcuts.
You keep pushing.
Because you know that momentum is being built, even when it doesn’t feel like it yet.
If this resonated with you and you want more mindset shifts like this, I share deeper lessons every week inside our newsletter and Substack. It’s where I break down the principles behind sustainable health, longevity, and body recomposition without extremes.
You can join us there and start building your own flywheel.
One push at a time.
Sincerely,
Maxime Sigouin
